Our Very Own Island Paradise – Discovering the Mystical Beauty of Patmos
Nestled in the captivating Aegean Sea, the small Greek island of Patmos beckons traveler’s with its mystical aura and serene ambiance. Known as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,” this island boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage that enchants visitors with its picturesque landscapes, ancient monasteries, and idyllic beaches.

Eirini Villas, a labor of love constructed by Christos and his father, stands as a testament to their dedication and attention to detail. Every stone, beam, door, and window was carefully selected from Patmos’ old constructions or gathered from the sea, with the intention of finding the perfect place for each element. The result was a collection of cottages that exuded charm and character, allowing us to disconnect from the clutter of daily life and find solace in simplicity.
Our villa, adorned with traditional Greek design elements, blended perfectly with the natural surroundings. The white-washed walls, accented with pale dusty blues, and antique furnishings transported us back in time. Each morning, Eirini herself delivered a delicious breakfast consisting of Greek yogurts, local honey, fresh fruits, and freshly baked bread and pastries. We savoured these morning treats on our patio, overlooking the shimmering Aegean Sea, a view that never failed to amaze.

Located below the island’s capital, Chora, we were just steps away from it’s enchanting labyrinthine streets. Chora epitomises the quintessential Greek island experience, with its traditional villas, cascading flowers, and cozy cafes. During our wanderings, we stumbled upon Andreas Kalatzis Gallery, a beautiful artists workshop and gallery filled with vibrant hues and stunning artworks.

Patmos spoils visitors with its array of stunning beaches. Whether you prefer golden sands, crystal-clear turquoise waters, or dramatic cliffs, the island offers a paradise for sun seekers. We embarked on a hike through the arid landscape, encountering roaming goats along the way, until we reached the secluded beach of Psili Ammos. Aside from one other couple, who happened to be enthusiastic nudist badminton players, we had the entire stretch of sand to ourselves—a moment of pure magic. We also ventured to the renowned Lambi, a beach whose name perfectly captured its allure, with shores adorned by shimmering multi-coloured pebbles reflecting the sunlight.
With most tavernas and restaurants closed due to the off-season, we embraced the opportunity to prepare most of our meals at the villa, using beautifully fresh ingredients from the local shops. We treated ourselves to a few nights out, and our favourite find was Tsipouradiko Mas. Sitting right at the water’s edge, the sea gently lapped against our feet as we watched the little wooden fishing boats arrive with our dinner. The menu featured sumptuous fresh seafood dishes and local delicacies, including stuffed vine leaves and Greek salads generously topped with a block of feta cheese.

During our Greek island adventure, we ventured to the tucked-away paradise of Arki. We explored it’s narrow streets, met friendly locals painting model boats, and embarked on a challenging hike to Tiganakia Beach. Our efforts were rewarded with breathtaking views, crystal-clear waters, and peaceful serenity. Arki is a hidden gem, where time slows down and natural beauty takes centre stage.

We couldn’t resist making a visit to the charming village of Zia on our way home via Kos. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Dikeosa, it provided an escape from the bustling coastal areas. The village is renowned for its jaw-dropping panoramic views, vibrant tapestry of shops, tavernas, and picturesque houses. It was the perfect finale to an unforgettable trip.
Patmos, with its spiritual heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and welcoming locals, is a destination that encapsulates the essence of Greece. Whether you seek tranquility, cultural exploration, or simply a chance to reconnect with nature, this beautiful island has it all.
